The Restoration Part 1

The Restoration Part 1

Fast forward to June 2023.  We have had Hatasoo on hard stand for a number of years waiting for us to find time to start work on her.  Finally I have been able to look more closely so the first job I thought would be to scrape the paint off below the water line.

Removing the antifoul

Our initial findings were the gaps where the planks have over time shrunk and been filled with cotton.  Its not surprising for a boat of Hatasoo's age but not the idea of a carvel construction.  At the join with the keel it was 1/2" wide and the connection between the keel and the lead ballast has a gap of over 1/2".  The original plan was to replace the bolts and reseat the ballast.  This would allow the rudder to rise back to its original position.  Its still going to have to be done, but will have to be dropped all together to do the major restoration that we are now able to see.

What we have found is that the keel bolts have had work in the past, as you would expect with a boat of this age, but instead of remove and replace, new holes where drilled at angles and new bolts placed leaving the old ones in place.  Perhaps because it was done this way, when new bolts were added it would not close the gap between the keel and the lead ballast.  In the picture below the gap can clearly be seen.  A mixture of cotton and modern silicon's had been used to fill the gap.

Removing cotton and exposing the gaps.

Finally I finished scraping the hull, lots of cotton removed silicon removed gaps found in the lower garboards and I'm feeling I need to get a professional opinion.

All uncovered ready to brace for transport

I have been a member of Port Edgar Yacht Club for a few years, racing on a Wednesday and sometimes Sunday.  While there I enquired if anyone had a recommendation for someone experienced with wooden boats.  Simon and Catherine whom I sail with on their Mustang 30' "Wildhorse" gave me a name and so the next part of our journey starts, Adam Way is to be contacted!
