Preparing Hatasoo for our first launch

Preparing Hatasoo for our first launch.

After Hatasoo was transported to Port Edgar Marina, we had her inside a shed to do some minor work before hoping to launch her.  This was our first boat, so books were read Ronnie and Vera were visited and of course there was the passing advise.

There needed recaulking, in places, so teach yourself twisting of cotton. Mixing white lead paste.

We had to refix the ends of planks that had been refixed numerous times before. Its only now that we realise why they kept popping.

So we varnished the topsides, I seem to remember  5 coats of traditional varnish. And the antifoul was a modern type.  The mast, yard and bowsprit varnished.  Photos of the fixings had to be taken as there was no way I would remember.

The next advise I received from Ronnie was to soak her.  The next few weeks I was in the shed with towels spread all round the inside, spraying salt water to saturate them every night.

  1. I had my 1921 (1922 per Lloyds) W.Fife Clinker Launch restored by Adam Way 2008-11. He replaced 30% of the teak planking most in the stern. He also put in a beautifully re-engineered midships bulkhead. The coach and everything done correctly and she is as simple and as close to original as possible. Best with your project. See her in Fife of Fairlie- Facebook- 'Fire Fay'.
